The moment of truth has arrived for the 23 boats competing in the Tour Voile 2019. The final of this 42nd edition of the event will see Team Beijaflore and Cheminées Poujoulat conclude a duel that began on 5 July in Dunkirk. Only five points separate the two teams, with Cheminées Poujoulat needing to put at least two boats between them and Beijaflore to claim final victory. After 14 days of sailing, all will be decided in a single Super Final race today. The battle for third place between Réseau Ixio – Toulon Provence Méditerranée and Golfe du Morbihan Breizh Cola will unfold at the same time, with the young team on Golfe du Morbihan needing to finish well ahead to close the 12-point gap and claim the final podium place. However with double points on offer today, this is not beyond the realms of possibility.
Outside of the Top 10 boats who have qualified for the Super Final, the remainder of the fleet will decide their definitive placings in final races for the Silver (places 11 to 17) and Bronze (places 18 to 23) groups.
In addition to the General Classification teams have also been competing for separate Youth, Amateur and Mixed rankings. Cheminées Poujoulat, skipperd by Robin Follin, already has the Youth Ranking wrapped up, while the all-female team on Le Boulangère, in 12th place overall, is also mathematically assured victory in the Mixed Ranking. Among the Amateurs the two leading teams have qualified for today’s Super Final. The Swiss team on CER – Ville de Gèneve have established a fairly comfortable lead of 12 points, but their closest rivals, Gregory Marchal – Les Sables d’Olonne, could rain on their parade by finishing at least six boats ahead of them.
Following the deciders for the Bronze and Silver groups respectively, the Super Final is set to start at 15.15 this afternoon with light and shifty winds of 4 to 8 knots forecast for the Bay of Angels.
