Around the island- Hard day for the leaders

Was local knowledge any good for the race that took place today around the island of Groix? We may doubt about it. The first to cross the finish line was Brunel from the Netherlands and the third one was Mummaduck, also from Holland. In between was the TMP-Coych from the Med.

In fact the boat from Hyeres is the only favorite to hold his rank today. Even the local Jimmy Pahun, also known as the Tour de France big mouth, went on the wrong side of the first beat after the start. But he did realized his mistake early enough to be able to finish seventh, just in front of Groovederci. The American skipper Deneen Demourkas was quite optimistic this morning about entering the top three before the end of the one month race around France. And even finishing eight was not so bad today. Courrier Dunkerque, the winner of the last two editions, was 10 and the overall leader, Nouvelle-Caledonie made a poor 17. The boat, skippered by Bertrand "king" Pacé did his worst result since the start but still hold the lead with a good margin. The race was even harder for Oman Sail's Renaissance skippered by Rob Greenhalgh. It might have been a day of glory for the Oman sailor for the 100 feet multihull Majan arrived yesterday in Lorient from the arabic sea. The giant trimaran who will race singlehanded the Route du Rhum next november went on the race course but didn't inspire the Omani crew on the Farr 30. Renaissance is now going down the leaderboard, being seventh, just in front of the first student boat. The good news of the day is for the sport : with just eight points between the second and the fourth, the competition is tighter and tighter. Tomorrow, after one inshore leg, the fleet will leave Lorient in the afternoon for Talmont in Vendée : a 100 milles offshore leg, mostly by night. We may expect some more changes !
